(Horn Lake, MS) People living in one Horn Lake neighborhood say they watched in horror last night as a dog was dragged by a chain behind a pickup truck.

They say they were helpless to do anything and can’t understand why the dog’s owner has not been charged with animal cruelty.

Horn Lake Police say right now they don’t have enough evidence to prove the man intentionally dragged the pit bull mix behind his truck and they can’t charge him with anything.

Tiffany Benson says she gave the dog to a man who lives up the street about a month ago.

She says she and her two young children watched as their family dog was dragged past their house.

Benson says she immediately called the man and asked him what he was doing and he told her the dog was fine.

“I saw my dog chained up to the back of the truck — just dragging it going 60 miles per hour,” said Benson.

Other neighbors say they were yelling and screaming for the man and his wife to stop, but they kept going.

Police eventually flagged down the driver when he stopped at a Mapco Station at Hurt and Goodman.

The man told police the dog must have jumped out of the bed of his truck and he had no idea he was dragging him.

“It’s pathetic they can’t do anything about it regardless of whether or not an eyewitness saw him tie it up. That’s not the point. They had people two blocks yelling that they were dragging a dog and they didn’t stop,” said Aerial Minor.

The dog was taken to a nearby animal hospital to be treated, but will likely have to be put down.

Police say the case is still open and they are urging additional witnesses to come forward.
