(West Memphis, AR) – A frantic mother showed up to a gas station in West Memphis where she said her 22-year-old son was shot. She was trying to find out what happened.

The mother quickly left telling News Channel 3 she was headed to visit her son at the hospital. Meanwhile, West Memphis Police officers were trying to figure out what led to the shootout at the Citgo on Ingram Blvd.

Angelica Rodriguez lives right behind the store and says she heard four to five shots and was terrified because she knew her mom was working as a cashier inside the gas station. She rushed over, “It was really scary because my mom was inside the store and people were shot and hurt.’

Rodriguez says one man was on the ground and appeared to be shot in the buttocks.

She counted at least 12 bullet casings on the inside of the store alone.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “I came and [my mother] was on the floor.”

The worried daughter said her mother had a few scratches but was ultimately okay. Witnesses say a second person had been shot as well, but investigators would not confirm it.

Police had one person in custody shortly after the shooting, but they haven’t said whether or not that person is a suspect.

People who live in the area were stopping by voicing their concern for the violence.

“I just think it’s tragic,” said Lisa Jamar, who lives nearby. “My heart goes out to the family of these people.”

Rodriguez was counting her blessings Sunday afternoon. With that much gunfire, she says things could have ended much worse.

“It was scary,” she said, “but thank God my mom is okay.”

The West Memphis Police Dept. would not release any information on the shooting Sunday.

They say it’s still under investigation and details will likely come on Monday.
