Woman Says Extra Toes Make Her Baby Extra Special
(Memphis) – When Bobby Jr. was born two months ago at Baptist East in Memphis, he appeared perfect to his proud mom Deirdra Malone.
“I glanced at him and I was like he’s perfectly healthy,” she said.
In the excitement, no one in the delivery room noticed there was something extra special about Bobby Jr.
“They gave me his footprint and I went 123456. Six I said six bring him back. We all started counting and they were like 6 for real on both. I was like 12 toed baby.”
That’s right he has twelve perfect little toes.
“It’s a gift and that’s how I look at him as a gift,” Malone said.
Doctors say this is a rare case of polydictal. Baptist East Dr. Jeannine Hogg says because the feet are perfect Bobby Jr. won’t have to ditch the extra digits.
“It’s what we call a minor anomoly. It won’t change life expectancy. It doesn’t cause issue for the child,” Dr. Hogg said. “It’s kind of a bonus it won’t affect their life and it’s something they can live with.”
Malone hopes the extra toes mean he’ll have strong feet.
“Maybe he’ll be a football player or run track runner or something,” she said.
Feet to help him make an indelible footprint on the world.
Malone says she’s trying to figure out where the genetic trait came from in her family. She thinks her grandfather may have had an extra finger, but no one had anything quiet like this.
