(Memphis) – A man is in custody after a deadly stabbing outside a family dollar store. It happened around 3 Wednesday afternoon in the 1200 block of Getwell.

It was broad day light and the shopping center was full of people when police say the victim was stabbed in between Family Dollar and the Walgreens.  They say the man then ran over to the Family Dollar store where an employee called 911, but it was too late.

“It’s sad,” Tina Stewart said.

Police aren’t releasing the victim’s name, but most people who shop in the area say they knew him.

“He just wanted to wash your windows and make some money,” he said. “He said he had two little young kids that he was trying to support that’s why I used to give him money.”

Thursday afternoon his life came to an end when someone stabbed him outside a busy shopping center on Getwell. Police spent most of the afternoon combing the area. Then just before 6 p.m., a couple blocks away they took a person of custody. Police aren’t saying who that is.

“They’re a lot of homeless people around here and  a lot of activity like that they just need to get it under control,” Kat Williams said.

Williams who was shopping at the Family Dollar when it happened believes the killer is another homeless man.

“He was stabbed by another homeless guy with a screwdriver and they tried to run out and help him and called an ambulance,” she said.

Police aren’t confirming that, but they say the stabbing death remains under investigation.

For people who knew the victim they hope for justice.

“He was a nice little person,” Stewart said.
