(Memphis) In Midtown Memphis, neighbors such as Nelly Walton hear the sound of gunshots. Minutes later, they see police and paramedics urgently working two separate investigations connected by one shooting.
Walton said, “I was in there watching TV and I heard the shot, but I had no idea somebody had gotten shot. I heard this boom, boom and I’m thinking it was a firecracker or something.”
It all began around 11 Friday morning. James Thompson lives nearby and felt like he was back in Viet Nam.
Thompson said, “I heard about 15 or 20 shots, bam, bam, bam, flashback to Viet Nam all over again.”
It wasn’t Viet Nam, but it was Jackson Avenue near Cypress.
Officers arrived a short time later blocking off the street with crime scene tape and counting bullet casings as they try to find a suspect described as a woman last seen driving a gold-colored Pontiac Aztec.
Thompson said, “I heard from a neighbor across the street who said it was domestic problems and that it started here and ended over on Sam Cooper.”
Over on Sam Cooper near East Parkway, officers were flagged down regarding a man who’d been shot.
Somehow the victim was able to drive from Jackson Avenue all the way to this intersection about a mile away. He was later transported to the Med.
Back on Jackson near Cypress, neighbors say this shooting was unusual for them and they hope it doesn’t happen again.
Thompson said, “So, it’s usually pretty quiet here and this morning was the complete opposite. It’s ridiculous, totally ridiculous and out of the ordinary and we don’t understand it.”
Walton said, “No, I’ve never seen anything like this before. I really haven’t and I pray it never happens again.”
