Police Identify 18-Month-Old Shot by Toddler Brother
(Memphis) Memphis police are still trying to figure out how a 2-year-old got his hands on a gun and shot and killed his 18 month old sister, Calvuna Reese.
It happened at the LaPalomo Apartments near Lamar and South Parkway Sunday.
The child died yesterday at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Hospital.
This is the second small child to die after being shot in less than a week.
The parents of that other child were arrested by the sheriff in Calhoun County, MS.
Memphis police are trying to sort through a similar case and decide whether or not there will be charges.
The light was still on at 1401 LaPaloma Circle but no one came to the door when we knocked.
It’s the apartment where a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot his 18 month old sister.
“Plenty of times I would help her out of the car bring the kid upstairs and help them inside,” said Andeaus Lee, neighbor.
Neighbors say the mother was at work, the father was home with the children when the shooting happened.
Lee said, ”It’s a real terrible situation. I hate for anybody to get killed especially a little girl.”
Neighbors say the father drove the child to the hospital after the shooting.
She died Tuesday.
A day later Memphis police say they are still investigating what happened and if an adult in the household will be charged.
This is the second time in less than a week parents will have to bury their small child after a shooting.
Lee said, ”I have seen the father out a few times and he’s looking like he’s hurting.”
It’s unclear if the gun fired because the 2-year-old dropped it or if he actually pulled the trigger.
Memphis police would not release the kind of gun used in the shooting, but we talked to a gun expert today and asked if it was even possible for a 2-year-old to be strong enough to pull the trigger.
He said yes, depending on the type of weapon.
