(New York) University of Memphis and former Wooddale High School defensive tackle Dontari Poe became the first Tiger since DeAngelo Williams in 2006 to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft when the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the 11th overall pick.

The 6’3″, 346-pound Poe only had 33 tackles, eight tackles for a loss and one sack in 2011, but the NFL looks more for athleticism and strength from its defensive tackles, and Poe has it in bunches.

Poe bench pressed 225 pounds 44 times at the NFL Combine in February, leading all players, and ran the 40-yard dash in 4.98 seconds.

Poe ended 2011 as a second-team All-Conference USA player and an honorable mention All-American by Pro Football Weekly.  He was also named co-MVP of the team and the Tigers’ Defensive Player of the Year.
