(Memphis) Memphis) Chase Mason Kelley, 18 years old, is facing charges of aggravated assault after Memphis Police report he beat up a man because he is transgendered.
According to the police report, the 20-year-old victim arrived at Methodist Germantown with several bruises and concussion.
The victim told police he went to meet Kelly Saturday night at the intersection of Yates and Poplar and Kelley attacked him, punching him until he was unconscious.
In the report, Memphis Police say the suspect’s brother also tried to run over the victim with his Jeep, but missed.
Jonathan Cole from the Tennessee Equality Project said federal laws in recent years have extended to protect the transgendered, “If a hate bias based on gender identity can be proven, the attacker may be subject to stronger penalties under the Matthew Shepard, James Byrd hate crimes law that passed in 2009.”
Kelley is due back in court next month.
The victim is expected to be okay.
