No Prom for Her Due To Confederate Flag Style Dress
(Dyer, TN) A teen ready for her senior prom was denied admission into the event because a worker thought her dress resembled the Confederate Flag.
18-year-old Texanna Edwards was dressed and ready for her big night and when she attempted to enter her prom, she was turned away according to the Tennessean newspaper.
Even though her dress consisted of Gibson Co. High’s colors - red, white, and blue – faculty members said it was “offensive and inappropriate.”
Employees at the school say Edwards had been warned previously about the dress and advised to get it cleared with administrators, but she didn’t.
Edwards says students, including herself, have worn attire with the rebel flag on it in the past and it wasn’t an issue.
Edwards and her mother said they spent about $500 on the dress, hair, makeup and her date’s apparel.
Gibson Co. School Director, Eddie Pruett, said there have been race-related issues at the high school in recent years and the school’s principal thought Edwards’ dress could have caused another problem.
