City Hall Corruption Hotline

(Memphis) Memphis Mayor A C Wharton unveils a new program to tackle crime and corruption in city government.

Starting this week, the lines are open to a new whistleblower hotline.

This is a pipeline to what Wharton hopes leads to better government.

He says this is an effort to see that each tax dollar is spent and used as intended.

In the three years since Wharton moved into the job at City Hal,l his administration has uncovered at least three major corruption scandals.

If there are more, he wants to hear about them.

“It’s another avenue for employees who feel something may not be exactly right and maybe they are a little reluctant as understandable sometime. This is just one more way to make it easy,” said Wharton.

The new whistleblower hotline is not only for city government employees but for those vendors and companies who do business with the city and ordinary citizens.

Wharton believes it will work because the first tip involving corruption in the general services division came through an anonymous letter.

Wharton said, “I could tell that it was somebody from the inside because of the detail. They listed the amount of equipment. The number of tires, these batteries and where they went. I said,┬áthis person knows something.”

Soon after, it was discovered employees at the city’s impound lot were stealing items out of cars.

The latest investigation lead to indictments of Memphis animal shelter employees.

Undercover officers were assigned there after animal abuse was reported.

WREG Commentator Otis Sanford says an anonymous reporting system is needed to help track future abuse.

Sanford said, “Memphis is a big city, Stephanie. Big cities inherently are going to have abuse. In a city this large with as many city employees as there are, there’s going to be abuse.”

There are two anonymous ways to report to the whistleblower hotline.
