(Lakeland, TN 1/11/2012) A 13-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital after being hit while trying to board a school bus.

The victim suffered injuries to his head.

It happened on Canada Road just south of Maple Point Cove.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, “The investigation shows that a school bus had stopped in front of an address on the southbound side of the 4100 block of Canada Road to pick up a hearing impaired 13-year old student.

The driver did activate the red lights and stop sign at which time the 13-year old male left his driveway and proceeded to catch the bus. He was struck by the passenger side mirror of a Jeep Cherokee driven by 18-year old Brandon Banks of Lakeland.”

Banks told investigators he was headed to school, was distracted, and he did not see the bus or the flashing lights at the time of the accident.

Banks was charged with Failure to Maintain Control and Safe Lookout along with Overtaking and passing a school bus.

“It was determined that alcohol and speed were NOT factors in the accident.”
